Join tenor saxophonist Joel Frahm for a spirited tribute to Sonny Rollins, celebrating the music and boundless imagination of the legendary “Saxophone Colossus.” With Brandon Coleman on guitar, Justin Dawson on bass, and Phillip Tipton on drums, Frahm honors Rollins’s legacy through bold melodies, deep swing, and the adventurous interplay that made his music so compelling. An evening to remember a giant of jazz—and celebrate the inspiration he leaves behind.
Joel Frahm brings a warm tenor sound, fluid phrasing, and a deep sense of swing to a wide range of jazz styles. His extensive performance and recording credits include work with Brad Mehldau, Betty Carter, Dewey Redman, Maynard Ferguson, and Kurt Rosenwinkel. Equally comfortable with swinging standards, intimate ballads, and adventurous modern jazz, Frahm brings an expressive voice and a keen sense of musical conversation to every setting.
Born in Racine, Wisconsin, Frahm studied classical piano and bassoon before taking up the tenor saxophone at age fourteen. After his family moved to Connecticut, he met pianist Brad Mehldau in his high school jazz program and began a lasting musical friendship. Frahm earned his degree in jazz performance at Manhattan School of Music and built his career on the New York jazz scene, developing close musical relationships with artists including drummer Matt Wilson and pianist David Berkman.
Frahm has released numerous recordings as a leader and contributed to more than 100 albums. His acclaimed duo recording with Mehldau, Don’t Explain, showcases the spontaneity and attentive interplay that distinguish his playing. He is also a sought-after collaborator with vocalists, having performed and recorded with Dianne Schuur, Jane Monheit, Cyrille Aimée, and others—reflecting his sensitivity to melody, phrasing, and each song's individual character.
